The first birth certificates recorded exclusively with blockchain technology are registered in Brazil. Brazil is the first country in the world where birth certificates are recorded with blockchain technology, without the “old-fashioned” paperwork.

According to a Cointelegraph Brasil report of September 1, Álvaro de Medeiros Mendonça is one of the first children in the country to have registered their birth certificate only with blockchain technology, without the need for a “normal” registration office.
Allegedly the parents were invited by the hospital to participate in a unique project developed by technology company Growth Tech in collaboration with IBM. The father, Waldyr Mendonça Junior, said that blockchain technology made the process of registering his newborn child much faster. The complete registration process took less than five minutes.
The registration was done via the Notary Ledgers platform of Growth Tech, which offers virtual notary services. The founder of the company, Hugo Pierre, says that the startup was looking for a new solution to improve the efficiency of registering birth certificates.
Carlos Rischioto, IBM’s blockchain leader in Latin America, explained that the child registration method has three phases. The first is the “Live Birth Statement” of the hospital. The parents then create a digital identity on the platform, after which the information is sent to the notary’s office and the certificate is finalized.
Rischioto said the new platform will eliminate bureaucratic obstacles in the birth registration process and that the entire process will be more efficient and transparent.
